Sriharjo Primary School opens its doors

On Saturday 14th July the MUM Bali Foundation and the BKP held the official opening ceremony of the Sriharjo Primary School in Imogiri sub-district.

Classroom  With 130 students it was our biggest and most ambitious project to   date and together with the students, teachers and Sriharjo village we are very proud of this wonderful new school. It’s no exaggeration to say that the likes of such a school cannot be found in Bantul or even Yogyakarta.

Besides six new classrooms, a staffroom, a sickbay, girls and boys toilets and an adventure playground we have also provided more than 1000 library books, dictionaries and encyclopedias in a renovated library that is colourful, exciting and engaging to both children and teachers alike.

As one library display boldly declares ‘Books are the window to the world’ and the students of Sriharjo now have the world and more at their fingertips. But the opportunity to discover the world doesn’t just stop there for these children. Thanks to the enormous support of the happy Hearts Fund, MUM and BKP were fortunate enough to work with Hewlett Packard on their new ‘computers in schools’ project.

Having already supplied state of the art computers to a school in Thailand, Indonesia was their next stop and Sriharjo Primary School was the one and only school to be selected in the entire archipelago.

Hewlett Packard has donated 13 flat screen computers and a 37inch LCD television which are located in the school’s new ICT lab. The students and teachers are taking to the computer lessons like ducks to water and, thanks to the help of Henry from HP, are displaying a great deal of confidence in navigating their way around a PC and the Internet.

We cannot thank Hewlett Packard enough for their generous support to our school. In particular we would like to thank Kanwal Sharma, Dennis Mark, Philip Lee, Henry Surapong, Kyiha Harris and all of your team.

Thank you again to Andrew McLatchie for your help with the suppliers for the school furniture.

To ensure the Sriharjo Primary School is an inspiration through and through we held a ‘Make a Mural’ competition for students with winning murals decorating the exterior of all school buildings. Polygon Cycles Indonesia kindly donated ten super bicycles as prizes for the winners.
